Harvesting Hope: Maize Growing and Capacity Building Initiative

The arrival of big bags of maize seed and fertilizer, purchased with your generous gifts, have signaled a new beginning, with the sustainable, income generating and nutritional Maize Growing project. The women committed to this industrious initiative have attended a three day competency-building training on agricultural and business practices in preparation for their work. The goal of the Maize Growing Initiative is to improve the quality of life for the people in Shikokho village, beginning with Yote Yawezekana women, in a productive, community-based and sustainable manner, through shared profits of the sale and use of maize as food. School Fees Scholarship Project

The children of Shikokho village (and the surrounding area) in Kenya are living in poverty and would love the opportunity to attend school. Those we are helping are children of widows in Yote Yawezekana Women's Group, all the women in this group are in some way affected by HIV/AIDS. The women have also done outreach to meet the school related needs of other children in the community. 26 youth have been supported thus far in their education.

Recipient: Yote Yawezekana Women's Group - Kenya

Grant Amount: $ 4,894 (For school year 2006 - provided tuition, lunch meals, uniforms, school supplies, holiday tutoring, guidance sessions, and other support as needs arose for 26 students -elementary, high school and vocational level)

Friendship Project

The 2nd graders at All Saints Academy in Breese, Illinois are developing friendships with Shikokho Primary School form 2 students through letter writing and learning about the country of Kenya.

The students raised funds and purchased school supplies for their friends in Kenya (delivered by an FSD volunteer). They also sent letters and a photo book about their school to Kenya.

 

Medical Clinic Donations

Many medicines, bandages, and laboratory supplies were sent from caring folks to Kenya with an FSD volunteer to Shikokho Medical Clinic where I volunteered during the summer of 2005.

 

Medical Care for Children at Nyanza Provincial Hospital

Medications were provided for children suffering with Burkitt's Lymphoma and other difficult medical conditions at Nyanza Provinical Hospital in Kisumu, Kenya.
